Thunder Mountain in Chicago
Next to the Shopper's World ( Community ) store at the intersection of Fullerton and Narragansett was Thunder Mountain. It was an ill-fated ski resort in the late 60's until about 1972. The "mountain" was actually rubble dumped at the vacant lot from the construction of the Kennedy Expressway. Does anyone have any information about this place? Next to the Shopper's World was a Firestone tire store, and on the other side was a Hillman's grocery store. Also, directly on the same corner was a Coca Cola bottling plant. It is now a Burger King. I've lived in the area my entire life ( 44 years ) and no one knows anything about the ski resort. After the resort closed, Twin Buick on Grand Ave. used to park new car inventory on the land. I remember climbing the side of the mountain pulling ourselves up with the ski lift cables that had fallen and were sticking out of the ground.
